Vaisakhi is celebrated as the historic day marking the birth of the Khalsa. On April 13, 1699, the 10th Sikh Guru, Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, tested the faith and commitment of thousands of Sikhs at Anandpur Sahib. He called upon those willing to sacrifice their lives for their faith and principles. The first five who stepped forward to pass this test were initiated into a new order known as the Khalsa. These five brave men came to be revered as the Panj Pyare (The Five Beloved Ones).
Who Are the Khalsa?
The Khalsa represents the collective body of committed and initiated Sikhs. The word Khalsa means both “Pure” and “King’s Own.” This divine order was created by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to embody the living form of the Guru on Earth, serving as God’s representatives. Sikhs are initiated into the Khalsa through a sacred ceremony called Amrit Sanchar, and those who undergo this initiation are referred to as Amritdhari Sikhs.
The creation of the Khalsa was a revolutionary act aimed at fighting oppression, protecting freedom, and ensuring basic human rights such as food, clothing, health, and education for all people. The Khalsa stands for righteousness, equality, and selfless service. Every Sikh is encouraged to strive towards joining the Khalsa and living by its values.
Legacy of Vaisakhi and the Khalsa
The establishment of the Khalsa transformed Sikhs into saint-soldiers who were committed to upholding justice and defending humanity against tyranny. Vaisakhi continues to inspire millions worldwide as a reminder of courage, unity, and unwavering faith.
This artwork pays homage to this momentous occasion in Sikh history, celebrating the spirit of sacrifice, purity, and resilience that defines the Khalsa.
