The festival of Vaisakhi, observed on April 13th, 1699, marks a significant turning point in Sikh history. On this day at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, established the Khalsa Panth—a distinct community of initiated Sikhs. Guru Sahib summoned thousands of Sikhs and, through a profound ceremony, called for five volunteers who were willing to sacrifice everything for their faith.
These five, later known as the Panj Pyare—Bhai Daya Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji, Bhai Himmat Singh Ji, Bhai Mohkam Singh Ji, and Bhai Sahib Singh Ji—were initiated through the Amrit (baptism) ceremony. Remarkably, Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself took Amrit from the Panj Pyare, signifying equality and humility, and adopted the name Gobind Singh from Gobind Rai.
Guru Sahib bestowed the surnames ‘Singh’ (lion) for men and ‘Kaur’ (princess) for women, symbolizing courage and dignity. The Khalsa was created as a force to uphold righteousness and protect the innocent from oppression and religious persecution.
Guru Ji declared, “Khalsa is my own true form; within the Khalsa, I reside,” highlighting the spiritual significance of the Khalsa in Sikhism.
