1984: A Sikh Genocide Remembered

After the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by her Sikh bodyguards, widespread massacres of Sikhs began across India, allegedly orchestrated at the behest of then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The most brutal killings occurred in Delhi, the nation’s capital, where mobs, reportedly led by Congress Party leaders, attacked Sikh homes and businesses. The entire government machinery appeared complicit in the violence, as police failed to intervene and even facilitated the atrocities.

Sikhs were burned alive with tires placed around their necks, and women and children were not spared from the brutality. Rajiv Gandhi further inflamed sentiments with his infamous statement: “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes,” which many interpreted as a justification for the violence. Over three days, thousands of Sikhs were murdered, their properties looted, and their lives destroyed. Official figures reported over 3,000 deaths in Delhi alone, but independent estimates suggest that up to 17,000 Sikhs were killed nationwide.

Despite decades passing since this horrific genocide, justice remains elusive for the victims. Successive governments have failed to hold key perpetrators accountable. Only a handful of low-ranking individuals have been convicted, while powerful political figures accused of inciting violence continue to evade punishment.
