On June 4, 1984, the Indian Army began heavy shelling on Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar as part of Operation Blue Star, a military assault on the Golden Temple complex. In response, Sikh warriors valiantly defended their sacred shrine, giving a befitting reply to the army’s aggression. This artwork portrays a Sikh warrior positioned atop Ramgarhia Bunga, courageously protecting the house of God during this tragic event.
Despite being vastly outnumbered, with only a handful of warriors against thousands of soldiers, these defenders fought bravely and attained martyrdom to safeguard their holy site. The army’s actions were a consequence of the government’s ill-conceived decision, which resulted in immense damage to the Golden Temple and significant loss of life. This operation left deep scars on the Sikh community and is remembered as a dark chapter in Indian history.
Today, it is disheartening to see that Punjab continues to be ruled by political parties that either betrayed the Sikh community in June 1984 or orchestrated Operation Blue Star. The residents of Punjab must awaken their conscience and make informed decisions in future elections to ensure justice and accountability.
The attack may belong to the past, but its pain lingers on even today. Never forget 1984—a reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and the need to preserve truth and justice.
